AMWU welcomes NSW Government Procurement Announcements

3 SEPTEMBER 2024 - The AMWU welcomes today’s announcement around local content and procurement measures introduced by the NSW Government to support local jobs and businesses, as “a step in the right direction for manufacturing workers in the state”.

The Minister for Domestic Manufacturing and Government Procurement Courtney Houssos will direct the NSW Procurement Board to lift the previous Liberal-National Government’s prohibitions on local content rules which made it unlawful for NSW Government agencies to seek, or even consider, local employment and business growth opportunities at any stage of the procurement process. NSW Government agencies can now consider local suppliers’ bids for government contracts, strengthening local development opportunities.

The NSW Government has also announced it will establish a Jobs First Commission to oversee the implementation and enforcement of local content measures.

AMWU NSW/ACT Acting State Secretary Brad Pidgeon said this policy will prioritise local suppliers for government contracts, generating economic growth within the state.

This new approach reflects the Labor Government's commitment to revitalising local industries, creating job opportunities, and ensuring that taxpayer dollars are reinvested back into the NSW economy. By prioritising local businesses, the government not only supports economic development but also aims to enhance community resilience and sustainability. This is a step in the right direction for manufacturing workers in the state.”

“The AMWU believes these changes will lead to more robust and competitive local industry, making sure that our members have secure, safe, and well-paying jobs. As the state recovers from the economic impacts of the past few years, continued support for local employment will be instrumental in building a stronger future for NSW.”

“The AMWU will continue to work closely with the government to ensure these measures are effectively implemented and that local businesses receive the support they need to thrive. Together, we can drive economic growth and create a prosperous future for all New South Wales residents.”

“We are firmly of the belief that we must build things here or more jobs will disappear.”
