BIG Stands for Local Jobs and Local Steel on the North East Link Project!

In light of recent news about the 11,000 tonnes of imported steel set for use on the North East Link, the Building Industry Group (BIG) has decided to take a stand. We are committed to protecting local jobs, supporting local industries, and ensuring Victorian infrastructure is built with Australian-made steel.

Supporting Local Industry: When we use Australian steel, we invest not only in a high-quality product but also in supporting our local economy, keeping jobs, wages, and tax dollars within our communities. This approach is a cornerstone of our union principles and community values.

Holding the Government Accountable: Victoria’s North East Link Local Development Plan maximises local content. Offshoring production fails to meet this commitment. We urge the government to uphold its duty to Victorian workers by using locally manufactured steel on the North East Link and for every major project going forward.

Protecting Our Sovereign Capabilities: Every dollar spent on local steel strengthens our domestic manufacturing and protects our capacity to build and grow. The reliance on foreign steel undercuts the local economy and sidelines the dedicated and specialised workers who keep Victoria moving.

Our Resolution: Until an acceptable resolution is reached, our members will not install or work with foreign steel on the North East Link. This action will stand until the government secures locally produced steel for this major project.

Let’s ensure Victorian jobs and industries remain the backbone of our infrastructure. Together, we can make local content a reality.
