The AMWU Retired Members in Victoria joined pensioners from around the state to march on State Parliament today.
The pensioners rallied in order to demand an increase in the allowances paid to them to meet the high cost of living.
The rally, which was organised by the Fair Go For Pensioners Coalition, in which the AMWU Retired Members are active participants, called for the State Government to increase allowances paid to pensioners, many of whom are struggling to meet household bills.
RMD Secretary Frank Cherry said pensioners urgently needed an increase in state allowances to help pay their rates, water, gas, electricity and telephone charges.
“We also want to the see the return of the car registration allowance that was scrapped a few years ago.”
Mr Cherry said the rising cost of living has left many pensioners living in poverty.
“What we want is a fair and decent increase in state allowances to help us meet the higher cost of living,” said Mr Cherry.
The Fair Go for Pensioners Coalition includes the Ethnic Communities’ Council Victoria, the Council on the Ageing (Victoria) and the Retired Members’ Divisions of the AMWU and Maritime Union of Australia.
