New skills make chocolate a richer experience

Ferrero workers with their hard-earned certificates.

Twenty-two AMWU members working at the Ferrero chocolate factory in Lithgow have benefited from a union negotiated training arrangement which enabled them to complete a Certificate III qualification in Food Processing.

The confectioners secured their qualifications after two years of training, which included coursework and practical on-the-job training. The qualifications are recognized throughout Australia.

The opportunity to obtain the certificate was open to all confectioners after an agreement was made between the AMWU and Ferrero to arrange for structured training to take place.

The training was undertaken on site at the Ferrero factory and was tailored within Australian guidelines by TAFE.

The members are now looking to negotiate a competency based system of pay that will increase their pay in line with their new skills.

AMWU organiser, Michelle Burgess said that management at Ferrero had recognised the mutual benefit that improved skills provide.

“Qualifications are a great way for workers in a lower wage industry like food and confectionery making because they give workers better employment opportunities and the ability to work at a higher level and earn more money.

“This kind of program definitely benefits a company as well, because workers with better skills can be more productive, or make a better product.”
