The AMWU was forced recently to defend the wages and conditions of members involved in the Offshore Construction Industry.
For the second time in six months the Australian Mines and Metals Association attacked workers in the industry stating that a welder or rigger could potentially earn more then $420,000 per year.
Despite the shonky maths and overestimated figure, the media ran with this line without checking their facts.
AMWU State Secretary Steve McCartney was asked to comment on the claims.
“Unfortunately this is another beat up by the industry to pave the way for lower pay and conditions in the offshore industry.
“The offshore industry is one of the most dangerous places to work in Australia, and comes with many inherent risks.
“These workers live on work in isolated areas, are subjected to shared ablutions and shared accommodation.
“These workers earn every cent and the union is fighting to ensure that they keep the pay and conditions that they rightfully deserve.”
