The AMWU has launched a campaign website to help workers in WA take on an employer blacklist, which has seen workers miss out on employment because of their union activity.
AMWU WA Secretary, Steve McCartney welcomed the launch of the register at the recent state delegates forum.
“The skills register website will be used to campaign against employers using 457 visas where we know there are locals wanting work.
“I think it will also be effective in proving that active unionists are being overlooked when there is work available.
“We do not deny that skills shortages exist in some areas, but they are being exaggerated by employers seeking to use 457 visas to undermine local wages and conditions and avoid the cost of investing in apprenticeships.
“In recent days we’ve also seen mining billionaire Gina Rhinehart argue the need for special economic zones in the North West to import labour outside laws and regulations in the country.”
The skills register website allows anyone within the AMWU’s coverage to register as looking for work or seeking an apprenticeship or cadetship.
