Mining’s gain fails to benefit manufacturing

Quarterly job figures released today, which show an alarming plummet in manufacturing jobs despite a massive boost in mining jobs, are cause for alarm, according to the AMWU.

In WA alone, 2000 manufacturing jobs disappeared while an extra 3800 mining jobs were created.

AMWU National Secretary, Dave Oliver, said action must be taken to make sure manufacturing also grows during the mining boom.

“While mining and infrastructure projects are going ahead, jobs making the materials and equipment they require should also be booming.

“Manufacturing industries with long-term export potential will be vital once the latest mining boom is exhausted. The mining boom is an excellent opportunity to build up manufacturing and we are not taking advantage,” he said.

“State and federal governments must increase the requirements for local content in public works and infrastructure projects, and should focus on helping Australian firms compete for contracts in the private sector.”

Mr Oliver also said that more investment was needed in skills and training.
