The Robin Hood Tax is a global campaign aimed at levying corporate bank transactions in order to fund international aid initiatives on health, education, climate change and global poverty.
The AMWU-supported campaign is planning a global day of action to be held in late May, ahead of this year’s G20 summit of world political and economic leaders, held in June. Robin Hood Tax Australia is lobbying for the Australian Government to show its support for a Robin Hood Tax at G20.
World leaders who have already expressed their support for the campaign include the chancellor of Germany, the president of France, the former prime minister of Britain and the foreign minister of Japan.
The AMWU is proud to be a part of this campaign and urges the Australian Government to take action:
“Our government mobilised billions of dollars to tackle the financial crisis and help Australia avoid recession. They did it because the stakes were high, but the strikes are also high for millions of people living in poverty. Australia should take the lead and urge our international partners to adopt this idea.”
