Workers exposed to asbestos at Kwinana Power Plant

The Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union says workers at the Kwinana Power Plant have been exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos.

AMWU State Secretary, Steve McCartney, said that workers have been sent home from Kwinana Power Plant after tests confirmed high levels of asbestos within the plant.

Demolition work has been carried out in areas that contained asbestos and as a result tests have confirmed that asbestos dust has been scattered throughout the power plant.

‘Verve has confirmed that there are no safe areas for our members to work and testing has even found asbestos fibres in areas surrounding the rest rooms and canteen.’ Mr McCartney Said.

‘Government has dropped the ball on asbestos and is risking the health and safety of Australian families as a result.’

‘This is the third asbestos incident on AMWU worksites in as many weeks; not enough is being done to ensure that workers are protected.’

‘The State Government needs to explain what checks and balances are in place to ensure that workers are not exposed to asbestos and why these checks have failed so miserably.’
