The AMWU is part of a campaign to protect Western Australian workers from a WorkChoices style policy from the state Liberal government in WA.
WA Treasurer, Troy Buswell, and the State Government have appointed a former Howard Government industrial relations advocate to review Western Australian workplace laws.
These laws cover work, as well as 30% of the state’s workforce, including the public sector and many small businesses.
AMWU State Secretary Steve McCartney said that the AMWU was teaming up with all WA unions in the campaign.
“We are very concerned that the review will result in changes to WA laws where individual contracts are used to lower pay and conditions, awards are stripped back and the independent umpire loses its ability to resolve disputes.”
In the 1990s the Court / Kierath State Government introduced this type of legislation and thousands of WA workers were worse off.
John Howard introduced similar changes under WorkChoices, which were rejected by Australian voters as extreme and bad for working people.
“We want to send a strong message to the State Government, said Mr McCartney.
“No WorkChoices in WA.”
“This issue is so important we are joining with other WA unions to run a series of TV ads. We have also established a campaign web site.”

Pass the web link onto your friends and family, and make sure everyone in your workplace is a member of the union and they know what’s going on
We want to improve your pay and conditions and make sure you are able to do the work on which the community depends. Help us stop the State Government changing WA work laws which will make that harder.
