Ford Australia has announced a $20 million expansion of their casting plant in Geelong after receiving crucial funding from state and federal governments.
The expansion will boost Ford’s design and engineering capacity for its Ford Territory, creating 50 new jobs and securing jobs for 100 workers.
AMWU National Secretary, Dave Oliver welcomed the announcement, saying the expansion was due to multi-million dollar investment in the vehicle industry by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Industry Minister Kim Carr.
“This announcement really demonstrates the benefits of having a government that provides the environment to attract these kind of investment decisions. The auto industry has been through a very difficult period over the last 12 months but this good news shows that we are now seeing a turnaround,” he said.
“The Federal Government’s New Car Plan has boosted confidence in the vehicle industry and triggered this expansion at Ford.”
Commonwealth Innovation, Industry, Science and Research Minister Kim Carr and Victorian Premier John Brumby were joined by Ford Australia’s Chief Executive Marin Burela in making the announcement.
The Victorian Government is providing significant support towards the Ford casting plant upgrade, while Senator Carr said the Rudd Government will separately provide $11.8 million for further design and engineering for the Euro IV Territory – available in petrol and diesel from 2011.
Thousands of jobs were at risk at the Geelong castings plant but the $20 million project will create a 50% boost in jobs, while raising production, cutting greenhouse emissions and saving water.
