Cochlear workers in Sydney have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a union collective agreement several times, but their employer is using the WorkChoices laws to refuse negotiations with the workers and the AMWU.

Cochlear workers have made their wishes clear in two ballots that they do not want a non-union agreement, instead preferring to be represented by the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union in wage negotiations. These are proud workers. They take pride in their company and the good work they do. All they want is that their decision be respected. Australians deserve the right to have a say in their terms of employment. If workers want, and vote for, a collective agreement, that decision should be respected. If workers want to be represented by their union, they should have that right. I support the ACTU position on democratic bargaining, and call on the Rudd Labor Government to enshrine this right in law.
