stop 457 visa exploitation

The 457 visa program, set up by the Howard Government, allows employers to import overseas workers on less pay than Australian workers, force them to sign individual contracts, pay dubious fees for immigration costs, and face deportation if they question their conditions.
We need the new Rudd Government to fix it.

The AMWU is campaigning against this disgraceful abuse of overseas workers.
This site will help you to learn more about the deliberate use of 457 temporary visas by employers to drive down wages and conditions in Australia, and how you can help stand up for all workers' rights to decent pay and fair treatement at work.

Australia's skilled immigration system allows migrant workers to be underpaid and exploited. The minimum requirements for checks on 457 visas that the Howard government removed in 2001 should be restored. Checks to establish local labour shortages, health and safety training, and qualification standards should be a minimum part of any skilled immigration program.
